Is Stephen Curry the greatest shooter of All-Time

Is Stephen Curry the greatest shooter of all time? Stephen Curry entered the league and was considered to be just a good shooter and nothing else. Steph being considered undersized was not seen as a defender. But the Golden State Warriors trusted him so they chose Curry with their 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.

Fast-forward 12 years, Steph Curry is a three-time NBA Champion and a two-time NBA MVP. The Golden State Warriors, under coaches Mark Jackson and Steve Kerr, established their style of play around Curry and literally changed the game of basketball. After the Warriors’ dynasty ruled the NBA in the late 2010s many teams have focused on outside shooting but not many have succeeded.

The reason for that is simple. Curry is a unique player and even though the game has seen many great shooters in the past, Curry is undoubtedly the best. Not everyone will agree on that. Ray Allen and Reggie Miller had long careers and have made a lot of clutch 3-pointers during their respective careers but there are reasons why Curry tops them both.

One reason why he is considered the best one is because of the accuracy with which he makes his shots. The NBA 3-point shot is 24 feet away. The average percentage of this shot across the league is 35%. When Steph shoots an average distanced three, he makes it 43.3% of the time.

For players who shoot from 30-35 feet away, which is considered a long-distance three, the NBA average is 22%. When Steph Curry decides to shoot from this range, he averages a staggering 48%.

Steph ranks 2nd on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers made list. It took him 715 games to make 2,560 3-pointers, while Reggie Miller, who is third on that list today, took 1,389 games.

At the end of the 2020-21 NBA season, Curry has made 2,832 3-point shots in 762 games played. He is only 141 3-pointers behind the current leader Ray Allen.

Allen and Miller have 18 completed seasons under their belt, while Steph is still considered to be in the prime of his athletic ability after his 12th season.

Ray Allen has made 2,973 threes in 1,300 games he played or 2.29 per game while Reggie Miller made 2,560 on 1,389 games or 1.84 per game. Curry on the other hand, is making 3.72 threes per game and if he keeps that pace and plays as long as Allen and Miller did, he will make over 4,000 3-pointers in his career.

Besides the numbers, another thing that makes Curry the best shooter ever is his style of play.

Both Reggie Miller and Ray Allen, like most shooters, were primarily catch-and-shoot players. Steph’s ability to shoot off the dribble or create his own shot is unlike ever before. His remarkable handling ability, composure, and the clutch gene all shooters need in order to be feared.

In addition, Curry also holds the record for the most 3-pointers made in a single season, at 402. In fact, he’s played 3 seasons that belong in the top 4 for most threes made in a season. He has made the most threes out of anyone else in a season 5 different times.

Curry also belongs to a very exclusive club of former and current NBA players called the β€œ50-40-90” club or the β€œ180” club. This group of players are the only ones to shoot 50% from the field, 40% from three-point territory, and 90% from the free-throw line. This club represents players who were able to shoot at a high percentage from all areas of the floor. Oftentimes, a player will reach this feat in 1 or 2 of the categories, but only 7 players have ever been able to shoot well enough for all 3 since the NBA began using a 3-point line in 1979.

So with all the respect to the other all-time great shooters, there are arguments who clearly crown Stephen Curry as the greatest shooter of all time So instead of questioning him, we should all enjoy watching the game while he still plays.

I fell in love with the game of basketball at 15 years old. I am an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls as I am from the windy city! This blog was created as a side hobby during my sophomore year in college and I have stuck with it ever since.
