How many rings does Steve Kerr have? Despite starting just 30 games in his entire pro career, Steve Kerr’s basketball resume is unmatched.

Kerr has had one of the most unique careers that anyone can have, from being a role-player on a Chicago Bulls super-team to coaching some of the league’s greatest players.

As a player, the three-point sharpshooter earned five championship rings – three with the Chicago Bulls and two with San Antonio Spurs.

In his first year coaching, Kerr became the winningest rookie head coach in NBA history with the Golden State Warriors who ended the 2015-16 season with a 67-15 record and winning the NBA Championship. A year later, Kerr’s Warriors set an NBA all-time record with a 73-9 season, one win over the 1995-96 Bulls team that Kerr was part of. That year the Warriors failed to repeat, but they won back-to-back championships in the following two seasons.

But what makes Kerr’s story so intriguing is the road he has taken to reach the pinnacle of the sports world.

Kerr was born on September 27, 1965, in Beirut, Lebanon, as one of the four children of Ann and Malcolm H. Kerr.

He spent most of his childhood in Beirut and other parts of the Middle East. He was educated at Cairo American College in Egypt and the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon, before coming to America to attend the Palisades High School. While there, he developed a serious interest in basketball.

Despite being an accurate outside shooter he was not heavily recruited by colleges but did receive a scholarship from the University of Arizona, where he had an outstanding career, helping the Wildcats reach the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament in 1988.

When Kerr was 18 years old and attending the University of Arizona as a freshman, his father was assassinated in Beirut on the morning of January 18, 1984. The sudden loss of his father deeply affected Kerr.

He played five seasons for Arizona between 1983 and 1988, appearing in 129 matches and scoring an average of 11.2 points per game. He was a member of the USA basketball team that won the gold medal in the FIBA World Championship in Spain in 1986. Two years later, he graduated from Arizona with a Bachelor of General Studies, with an emphasis on history, sociology, and English.

After becoming eligible for the 1988 NBA draft, Steve Kerr was picked by the Phoenix Suns in the second round as the 50th pick overall. He played in only 26 games for the Suns in his rookie season and afterward was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a future draft pick.

Kerr had a much bigger role with the Cavaliers team led by star point guard Mark Price. He was a backup guard on that team, and his role was to make jump shots which he did better than almost every player in the league.

Kerr was also part of the squad that blew out the Miami Heat by a record margin in 1991, winning 148-80.

During his third season with the team, the Cavaliers traded him to the Orlando Magic for a future second-round pick.

Kerr then found himself a part of an Orlando Magic team that featured a young and dominant Shaquille O’Neal on the roster. While Kerr did not necessarily have an impact on the Magic team, he did get to witness some amazing feats by the big fella including the time where he dunked so viciously that the entire backboard fell down.

After his short stint in Orlando, in September 1993, Kerr signed with the Chicago Bulls. He couldn’t even dream how his career will turn out from that point on.

The Bulls were the team where Kerr’s name was made. He was never a star, but he was a dependable guard who could light it up on the floor when his jump shot started falling. Kerr was a part of a Bulls team led by Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson, that managed to 3-peat in dominating fashion.

Throughout his playing career with the Bulls, Kerr certainly had some unforgettable moments. The first being the fact that he hit an NBA Finals game-winning shot when Michael Jordan picked him out for an open jumper. Quite famously, Kerr mentioned to Michael during a timeout that he “was ready” if MJ got double-teamed. Kerr managed to find himself open and drain the shot to win the game.

Not to mention, Kerr also admitted that he was the player that got punched in the face by Michael Jordan. While certainly not a high point in an NBA career, it might mean something that Kerr was able to get under the skin of the greatest player of all time.

In 1997 Kerr also won the NBA Three-point shooting contest.

In 1999, the Spurs acquired Kerr and he got the chance to play under the legendary coach Gregg Popovich. Playing amazing basketball throughout the season, the Spurs won their first NBA championship. Kerr was an important role player coming off the bench, hitting clutch shots during the playoffs. That was his fourth consecutive NBA championship.

Despite the success the Spurs had in the previous season, Kerr was traded for the 2001-02 season to the Portland Trail Blazers. He played 65 games for the Blazers, scoring 4.1 points per game on average.

Kerr returned to San Antonio for what was to be his final season as a professional basketball player. He significantly contributed as the Spurs had yet another successful season and won the NBA championship for the second time.

Kerr retired with a record of playing 910 matches and scoring 6.0 points per game on average.

More importantly, Kerr ended his playing career with the best three-point percentage (45.4%) in the history of the league.

In 2003, shortly after his retirement, Steve Kerr joined the Turner Network Television (TNT) as a broadcast analyst. He served on the commentary team alongside Marv Albert.

He briefly quit television following his employment as general manager of the Suns but he made his return to TNT during the 2010-11 NBA season.

In 2014 he made another move that will change his legacy forever. Kerr joined the Golden State Warriors as the team’s head coach replacing Mark Jackson.

The Warriors had not won an NBA championship since 1975 and the team’s divisional performance had been abysmal as well.

Kerr, upon his appointment, decided to make use of elements of the triangle offense, a playing method often employed by his Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson. The Warriors eventually won their first NBA title in 40 years when they defeated Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA finals.

That was the first of five consecutive NBA finals with the Warriors, winning three of them.

He still serves as Warriors head coach and is Gregg Popovich’s assistant on the USA national team.

Still being only 55, Kerr has much more to give to the game of basketball.
