Top 5 Point Guards for the Boston Celtics Throughout The 21st Century
Top 5 Point Guards for the Boston Celtics Throughout The 21st Century. The Boston Celtics are the only team in NBA history that has obtained 17 championships. Point guards like Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, and Nate Archibald are the big factors why the team has been so successful in the last century.
The point guard position was best known as the one who would carry the ball and set up his teammates to score but the evolution of basketball really hit them hard. Now, an average point guard must know how to shoot threes and knockdown pull-up jumpers. Seeing a pass-first point guard in today’s game is rare.
The 21st century is the century where the Celtics won only a single championship. Their acquisition of point guards is not damn near good as what they have acquired in the 20th century. Skill-wise, these point guards were actually good but in different areas of basketball.
So, here are the Top 5 Point Guards for the Boston Celtics Throughout The 21st Century. Let’s get it!
#5 Terry Rozier (2015-2019)
Terry Rozier is a gifted scorer and ball-handler, he’s not that easy to guard because of his speed and his ability to finish. He also has a superior vision that can be used to find an open man anywhere on the court. He has seen most of his time playing as a backup point guard for the team.
He has had a career average of 7.7 PTS, 3.6 REB, and 2.3 AST with the Boston Celtics. He became an integral part of the team when he played as the starting point guard for the 2018 NBA Playoffs in replace of the injured Kyrie Irving. He helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals before they got defeated in Game 7 by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was named “Scary Terry” because of his magnificent performance in that postseason run.
#4 Kemba Walker (2019-present)
Kemba Walker is no doubt one of the best point guards in today’s NBA. He is a reliable point guard who can score and pass. His capability of being a leader makes him one of the most important parts of the 2019-20 Boston Celtics roster. We placed him 4th because he just recently joined the team and he had not yet achieved anything since going to Beantown.
Walker was once a member of the Charlotte Hornets before joining the Celtics. He made just 2 playoff appearances since he was drafted in the 2011 NBA Draft as the 9th overall pick. He’s a 4x NBA All-Star, and 1x All-NBA.
Prior to the NBA season suspension, he was averaging 21.2 PTS, 4.1 REB, and 4.9 AST in 50 games he played this season.
#3 Kyrie Irving
Kyrie Irving is arguably the best ball-handler that the NBA has ever had. Besides his ball-handling skills, he has the ability to shoot the ball while in traffic, he can shoot from the perimeter efficiently, and can also pass to an open man.
When he had joined the Boston Celtics, they were expected to contend for the championship. Unfortunately, he injured himself prior to the 2018 NBA Playoffs and didn’t play a single game for the whole postseason. Despite losing him, the team still reached the Eastern Conference Finals, thanks to the dexterity of their youngsters.
The very next season, everyone thought that they would reach the NBA Finals because Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving came back from their respective injuries. The team choked in the Semis against Bucks as they defeated 4-1 in that series.
In 2019, Kyrie Irving left the team without reaching any of the goals that the fans expected him to reach.
#2 Isaiah Thomas
Isaiah Thomas is an offensive 5’9 point guard who can score really well inside and outside. His small size, his speed, and his ability to get through defenders are his best asset. He can also finish the ball smoothly through contact with no hesitation.
Thomas led Bleed Green to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016 and 2017. He was named “King of the Fourth” and “Mr. Fourth Quarter” because of his clutch 4th quarter performances. He averaged 24.7 PTS, 6.0 AST, and 2.7 REB per game while in Boston.
Thomas got traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers with some valuable assets in exchange for disgruntled star Kyrie Irving. If only he got at least a single championship with the Boston Celtics, maybe he’s the best point guard that the team has had in the 21st Century.
#1 Rajon Rondo
Rajon Rondo is number 1 on this list because of his championship ring. He’s the only player on this list that won a championship with the team. He has helped the Celtics get the championship in 2008 as their floor general.
Rondo is a pass-first point guard that’s why he’s so good at passing the ball to his teammates. His basketball IQ was and still is amazing. He hit people with passes that seemed impossible to receive. Younger teammates sometimes get hit in the face with balls until they wised up and realized they could get a pass from Rondo at any moment.
His basketball IQ helped him set up his three future-hall-of-fame teammates for big scoring nights even as they aged. It also led to fights with teammates and with coach Doc Rivers, who had trouble reeling in his mercurial star.
In his 9 seasons with the team, he averaged 11 PTS, 4.7 REB, and 8.5 AST. Now, it’s yet to see if Kemba can surpass what he had done with the Boston Celtics franchise.
