How many players are there in the NBA?
The NBA league is home to the best basketball players in the world and each year approximately 475-525 different players go through the league.
In a given moment an NBA team is allowed to have 17 players under contract with two of them being under โtwo-wayโ contract.
At the start of the 2017-18 season, the NBA introduced two-way contracts, which allow a player to sign a guaranteed deal with an NBA franchise and play for both its NBA professional team and its G-League affiliate. For example, if a player signs a two-way deal with the Chicago Bulls, he will be able to play for Chicagoโs G-League team, the Windy City Bulls.
The two-way contract was introduced to benefit undrafted players who do not make the cut in the NBA Draft and enables teams to keep these players “on retainer” without having to sign a full-time contract.
Most of the teams make many transactions during the season, so there are examples of more than 25 players going through a certain team in a single season. That number depends on many factors such as team ambitions, current roster, salary cap, injuries, etc.
In the 2020 NBA season teams had 20.86 players on average going through their roster with the Houston Rockets leading the way with 30.
