Who has the most 3-pointers in NBA history?

The three-point shooting has become an essential part of the game of basketball as nowadays that is expected not only from the guards but also from the bigs.

There have been players who have left a mark in NBA history as killer shooters helping their teams not only win games but literally NBA championships.

If you ever wondered which player has made the most three-pointers in the history of the NBA, the answer to that question is Ray Allen.

In February 2011, Allen climbed on top of that list as he made his 2,561st career three-pointer in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Allen got to the record a little faster than Reggie Miller who was on top at the time, needing 6,430 shots by his 15th season to reach the record. Miller took 6,486 shots from 3-point range in his 18-year career with the Indiana Pacers.

When Allen put an end to his remarkable NBA career he had a total of 2,973 three-pointers made out of 7,429 shots which is exactly 40%.

Even though it wasnโ€™t in the regular season, the most remembered one is the corner three Allen made in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals to send the game in overtime which was the crucial shot that helped the Miami Heat win the championship over the San Antonio Spurs.

Still, Allen was much more than just a three-point shooter as he scored 24,505 points in his 18 years in the league playing for Milwaukee, Seattle, Boston, and Miami. In 2018 he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Many do not know that at the beginning of his NBA career Allen was one of the best dunkers in the league and participated in the 1997 NBA Slam-Dunk contest which was eventually won by then-rookie Kobe Bryant.

Meanwhile, Steph Curry has made it to the second place on this list and is only about 100 three-pointers behind Ray Allen.

Obviously, it is just a matter of time when Curry will go on top and if he stays healthy, that will definitely happen during the 2021-22 season.

Entering the season, Curry needed 142 3-pointers to surpass Allen and knowing that he makes on average 3.7 per game and he hit 337 last season, he will probably be on top before the All-Star break.

During the 2015-16 season, Curry set the all-time single-season record with 402 made three-pointers which led him to the second straight MVP award. He is the only player in NBA history to hit more than 400 threes in a single season and he did that in 79 games, attempting 886 and hitting 45.5% of them.

The next in line is Reggie Miller who spent his entire career with the Indiana Pacers being the first shooter recognized as lethal. During the 1990s, Miller was by far the best shooter in the league who once scored 8 points in 9 seconds beating the New York Knicks in a playoff game in Madison Square Garden.

Miller spent more than a decade on top of the list before Ray Allen reached him in 2011.

Miller who is also a Hall of Famer spent 18 years in the league scoring 25,279 points including 2,560 three-pointers, hitting 39.5% of his 6,486 attempts.

Number four on the list is another active player, and that is James Harden. โ€˜The Beardโ€™ is playing his 13th season in the league and has made more than 2,450 threes so far but is still one level lower than the top three on this list as he is hitting only 36.4% of his attempts.

Not that we are trying to underestimate Hardenโ€™s achievement but unlike the others on this list, Harden is shooting 7.7 three-pointers per game and making only 2.8 of them.

Harden is still only 32-years-old and probably has 3-4 seasons left in the tank which means that he will go up on this list.

The top four players on this list were much more than just shooters which cannot be said for the fifth one, Kyle Korver.

Korver split 17 seasons between six NBA teams and wherever he played he was a valuable asset with his three-point shooting. His best days were with the Atlanta Hawks where he even earned an All-Star selection in 2015.

He finished his career with 2,450 made threes on 5,715 attempts or hitting 42.9% of them.

In the 2009-10 season with the Utah Jazz, Korver was hitting a remarkable 53.6% of his attempts.

At number six, we have Vince Carter which is another proof that he was much more than just a flying highlight film. Carter played a record 22 seasons in the NBA splitting between Toronto, New Jersey, Orlando, Phoenix, Dallas, Memphis, Sacramento, and Atlanta.

In that time Carter made 2,290 three-pointers on 6,168 attempts or hitting 37.1% of them.

Jason Terry is seventh on the all-time list with 2,282 made threes on 6,010 attempts (38%).

โ€˜The Jetโ€™ was one of the key players on the 2011 Dallas Mavericks championship team.

Number eight is Jamal Crawford who spent 20 years in the league playing for eight different teams and winning the Sixth Man of the year award three times in 2010, 2014, and 2016 with the Atlanta Hawks and twice with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Crawford made 2,221 threes on 6,379 attempts which makes his 34.8% the lowest among the top 10.

Paul Pierce aka โ€˜The Truthโ€™ is at number nine. Pierce spent the majority of his career with the Boston Celtics leading them to the 2008 NBA championship.

Pierce, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame this year has made 2,143 three-pointers in his 19 years in the league, hitting 36.8% of his 5,816 attempts.

The top 10 is rounded with another active player as Damian Lillard has hit 2.066 threes for the Portland Trail Blazers so far. Lillard is a 37.3% career three-point shooter and will definitely go much higher on this list.

I fell in love with the game of basketball at 15 years old. I am an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls as I am from the windy city!
