The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a premier men’s professional basketball league in North America, comprising 30 teams, 29 of which are based in the United States, and one in Canada. The league is divided into two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference is further split into three divisions: the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast divisions in the East, and the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest divisions in the West.

The NBA traces its origins to June 6, 1946, when it was founded as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). On August 3, 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) and adopted its current name, the National Basketball Association. The NBA is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB), an organization recognized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as the governing body for basketball in the United States.

Each NBA season consists of 82 regular-season games, with teams playing 41 games at home and 41 away. The regular season typically runs from October to April, followed by the playoffs, which usually begin in late April or early May. The playoffs feature the top eight teams from each conference, including each division winner. These 16 teams compete in a series of best-of-seven rounds, with the first team to win four games advancing to the next round.

The NBA playoffs are structured as follows:

  • First Round: The top eight teams in each conference face-off, with the first seed playing the eighth seed, the second seed playing the seventh seed, and so on.
  • Conference Semifinals: The winners of the first round advance to the conference semifinals, where they compete against each other to determine the conference finalists.
  • Conference Finals: The two remaining teams in each conference battle for the conference championship and a spot in the NBA Finals.
  • NBA Finals: The Eastern and Western Conference champions compete in the NBA Finals to determine the overall league champion.

Throughout its rich history, the NBA has produced numerous iconic players and memorable moments, captivating fans worldwide. The league’s global popularity continues to grow, thanks in part to its commitment to expanding its reach through international games, digital platforms, and other innovative strategies. As the NBA evolves to meet the changing demands of its fans and the sports landscape, it remains a powerhouse in the world of professional sports.
