Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar Explains How He Learned The Skyhook
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is arguably one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA. His signature move “skyhook” was unstoppable during his time as it was rarely blocked. He’s the only player who can do this move efficiently. Many players don’t want to try this because a real skyhook is incredibly inefficient, and most players don’t have the body type (7’3″+ with incredibly long arms) to make it more effective.
KAJ tweeted his explanation on how he learned his patented “skyhook”.
โI learned to shoot the hook shot while I was in grade school using a drill made popular by George Mikan. Wilt blocked one of my hook shots during my rookie year & after that he wasnโt able to guard me,โ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar replied to a fan who asked about how he learned his signature move.
His signature move really helped his career to reach the highest total points and highest total field goal made in NBA history. It is the most unguardable move in basketball history as it was difficult for a defender to block without committing a goaltending violation. He was adept at doing it with either hand, which made him even more difficult to defend against, though as a right-handed player, he was stronger shooting it with his right hand than his left.
Kareem is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points, and he won a league-record six MVP awards. In his 20 years playing in the NBA, he won six championship rings, two Finals MVP awards, 15 All-NBA Team, and 19 NBA All-Star appearances. He has a career average of 24.6 PTS, 11.2 REB, 3.6 AST, and 2.6 BLK per game.
Kareem was drafted 1st overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1969 NBA draft. He played with the team until 1975 when he requested a trade and was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. When joining the Lakers, that’s when he began wearing his signature trademark goggles.ย
